Dear Sponsors and Friends of Children of Promise,
We write today to thank you for your strong support of the Haiti Relief effort through Children of Promise. We are pleased to share with you that over $60,000 has been given since January 12 by you and a host of others who care deeply for the children and their families in Haiti. We are humbled by this outpouring of concern and love for the children – but not
surprised. Children of Promise has wonderful, committed sponsors and friends who generously give whenever there is a need. We are so grateful for you and the host who join you in making sure that children receive the care they need. It is a privilege to partner with you on behalf of the children in Haiti, and indeed, in 23 countries around the world.
Just a few days ago, we met personally with Phil Murphy, who visited our children’s families and homes on January 16 and 17. The photos in this letter were taken by him during that visit. We learned from Phil that while there is immediate need for food, clothing, blankets, and medicines, the most pressing need over all is for rebuilding and repairing of homes. We have already sent several thousand dollars to meet the immediate basic needs (food, clothing, etc.). Other immediate needs are for shelter of some kind while families are waiting for homes to be rebuilt. Some families are still living outside, while others are trying to make do in the remains of their damaged and unsafe homes. We have ordered tents for these families, and they will be delivered through Agape Flights directly to Haiti and distributed by our staff there. Along with the family-sized tents, we have included cooking kits, sleeping mats, and crank flashlights.

Beyond immediate shelter needs, a plan is being put into motion to coordinate with various work camp groups to construct, rebuild, or repair the homes of the children, as well as repairs needed at the House of Blessing, including rebuilding of a portion of the security wall that was destroyed in the quake. This, of course, is vitally important for the safety and security of the children and staff during these uncertain days. Estimates for rebuilding homes are in a range of $8,000 to $10,000 per home. (At least 3-4 homes must be built from the ground up.) Homes will be built with sufficient foundation and will, for the most part, be constructed of cement block with considerable rebar to make sure they can withstand other shocks or quakes. Water filters and toilet facilities will also be included where needed. As the project progresses, depending on funds available and the needs of the families, additional items may be provided such as beds, bedding, furnishings, etc. Families will be involved in the construction, along with groups organized through a collaborative effort between several organizations. If you or your church is interested in participating in a work effort in Haiti, you may contact Don Smith (Global Missions - Church of God Ministries) at 1-800-848-2464 ext. 3047. As construction plans take form, funds for each part of the plan will be relayed at the appropriate times. Our intent is to assess well, and then provide the funds you have given for specific construction and repair projects for the children and their families when needed during the next few months.
As you can see in these photos, some homes have been severely damaged, but will be able to be repaired and reinforced. We are grateful that none of our children were injured seriously in the earthquake, and immediate medical needs seem to be minimal; however, living conditions are difficult and unsanitary. We want to be prepared should our children need medical assistance. Funds have already been sent and are on hand for these purposes.
It is really true that we can do so much more together than any of us could ever do by ourselves. Thank you for partnering with Children of Promise to meet the needs of our sponsored children and their families in Haiti. God bless you.
